A gutter leak is almost never a hole in the middle of a gutter. It is a seam. So the useful question when you are comparing gutter quotes is not what the metal costs, it is how many seams end up on your house.
What Sectional Actually Means
Sectional gutter comes in 10-foot lengths from a big box store and gets joined with connectors and sealant. On a 40-foot run that is three joints. Around a typical Milwaukee house with four or five runs, you can end up with 12 to 20 sealed joints.
Every one of those joints is a maintenance item. The sealant is doing the waterproofing, and sealant in a climate that cycles between 95 degrees and 10 below has a working life of maybe 5–8 years. Then it cracks, and water runs down the back of the gutter into the fascia.
That is the actual failure mode we get called for. Not overflowing gutters. Rotted fascia board behind a gutter, because a seam upstream has been dripping for three years.
What Seamless Means
Seamless gutter is rolled from a coil on a machine we bring to the house. Your 40-foot run comes off the roll as one continuous 40-foot piece. The only joints in the entire system are at corners and at downspout outlets.
On a typical Milwaukee home, that takes you from 12 to 20 sealed joints down to four or six. Same aluminum, same thickness, same hangers. The difference is entirely in how many places the system depends on sealant.

Where Sectional Still Makes Sense
We are not going to pretend sectional never has a place. If you are patching a single 12-foot run over a porch, or the house is a rental you are selling in eighteen months, or access genuinely will not allow a fabrication truck, sectional is a reasonable economic decision. It is not dangerous. It just needs maintenance that most people do not do.
Gauge and Hangers Matter More Than People Think
Two things get overlooked in gutter quotes.
Aluminum thickness. Standard is .027. Heavier is .032. That sounds trivial and it is not, in a climate where gutters carry ice load every winter. A .027 gutter with a full ice trough in it deforms, and once the pitch is off it never drains right again. We use .032 for that reason.
Hanger type and spacing. Hidden hangers screwed into the fascia every 24 inches is the standard we hold. Spike-and-ferrule, the old nail-through-the-front method, works loose over a few freeze cycles and is the reason so many older Milwaukee gutters sag in the middle. If a quote does not say what hanger is being used, ask.
Pitch Is the Free Variable
Gutters need roughly a quarter inch of fall per 10 feet toward the downspout. Too flat and water stands, which in Wisconsin means it freezes, which means the ice sits there adding weight until the hangers let go. Too steep and it looks wrong from the street and overshoots at the outlet.
Standing water in a gutter after a dry day is a pitch problem, and it is fixable without replacing anything.
Color and Cost
Seamless aluminum runs roughly $9–$16 per linear foot installed in the Milwaukee market, depending on size, gauge, and height. A typical house with 150–200 feet of gutter lands somewhere in the $1,600–$3,000 range. Copper exists and costs three to four times that. It is beautiful on the right house and hard to justify on most.

What to Ask
Three questions sort most quotes: is it seamless or sectional, what gauge, and what hanger at what spacing. A contractor who answers those three quickly is a contractor who thinks about gutters.
