The cost breakdown, then repair versus replace. Between them they tell you what band to expect for your house and whether you are solving the right problem, which is the pair of questions every quote conversation actually turns on.

Because they are frequently not the same scope. Shingle line, whether tear-off is included, whether flashing is new or reused, and whether a deck repair rate is stated account for most of the spread. Normalise those four and the gap narrows sharply.

Usually more than the interest on financing it. Once water is getting past the deck you are adding sheathing replacement, insulation and interior repair to the same job. Deferring a cosmetic upgrade is a different decision from deferring an active leak.

A reasonable deposit, not the bulk of the job. Be wary of anyone wanting most of the cost before materials arrive, particularly after a storm. Established local contractors do not need your money to buy your shingles.

Only for sudden damage such as hail or wind, not for age and wear. Where a storm caused it, a documented claim often covers replacement less your deductible.

Only where the money went into the system rather than the sales process. Shingle class, ice barrier coverage, new flashing and corrected ventilation buy you years. A premium price with a code-minimum scope buys you nothing you can see from the ground.
